FAQ 3

Kids can't play without teams, and we can't have teams without coaches.
Every team needs at least one coach, however, we prefer to have two coaches so that responsibility can be shared across multiple parents, to  facilitate busy schedules. What that means is that we need your help.

Even if you've never played soccer, AYSO has all of the training you need, and depending on the age group, most of it can be completed completely online (6U and 8U). Older age groups require a few hours of in-person instruction where you can see what running a practice is really like.

Every coach will be provided with all of the information (and equipment) that they need to successfully coach their team. The nationally accredited training manuals even provide you step-by-step training plans that you can use for your practices.

For our 6U teams, training is done on Saturdays just before they play the game. Generally we'll have a professional or master coach there to provide the training session while you assist your team in participating in the training, and then you and another team will play a game.

For our 8U teams, you'll have one training session sometime during the week. You can use the prepared training plans, and then accompany your team to the game on a Saturday. We often have professional coaches available to assist you even for your mid-week training sessions.

For our 10U and older teams, they generally have two practices per week. Again, you'll have all the support you need, including pre-made, age-appropriate training sessions.

What are the advantages of coaching?
There are numerous advantages to coaching your child's team.

  • Your child will have a guaranteed spot on team
  • You control when and where the practices are (8U+) to better fit your schedule
  • Free coach swag (shirts, hats, etc.)
  • Free picture of you and your child on picture day
  • Two free tickets to the Stanford Game with the team
While the above tangible benefits are great, one of the greatest benefits of coaching is spending time with your child in a different dynamic. You'll be enriching children's lives while helping them to learn to play soccer. Seeing your child (or any child on you team) score their first goal, make their first save, accomplish something in a game that they learned in a training session is amazingly fulfilling for you and the child.

How do I sign up?
To sign up, you need to update your registration to indicate that you're willing to volunteer as a coach. Click on your account in the upper right-hand corner. Then click "Volunteer" on the left-hand side, and then click on the "Find Volunteer Roles". Once you do that, you'll be able to volunteer as a coach (head or assistant) and then fill out the form that is presented.

Here's a more detailed document: How to Register as a Volunteer

Please also head over to https://forms.gle/KoxijY3Y1BVA9UDj9 to indicate that you've preference on Coach Jersey size and preference on practice location that will help with the team formation.

Where do I get world class training?
As mentioned above, AYSO is the only sports program with nationally accredited training for our coaches (and all of our volunteer staff). There are a couple of other FAQs on how to sign up that we reference below. All coaches are required to complete the following training modules:

  • AYSO's Safe Haven (Online)
  • CDC: Concussion Course (Online)
  • Age-appropriate training for the age group you'll be coaching
Much of the training (in fact all of the training for the younger age groups) can be done online. For the older age groups (10U and up) there is an in-person component as well. Please see the topics in the Links section below for assistance on signing up for training.

Please also check the region calendar in the links below for important dates for coaches including:
  • Meetings
  • Trainings
  • Season Information (first day, picture day, last day, etc.)
